Russian, Afghan leaders discuss combating drugs

MOSCOW (AP) — The Afghan leader called the Russian president Wednesday to discuss the fight against drugs, the Kremlin said, days after complaining that his government hadn't been warned about a Russian participation in a recent drug bust.

President Dmitry Medvedev's phone conversation with Afghanistan's Hamid Karzai comes a week after a drug raid conducted jointly by U.S., Afghan and Russian agents near the border with Pakistan.

The unprecedented joint drug bust reflected an improvement in relations between the former Cold War foes, two decades after U.S.-financed Afghan militias chased the Soviet military out of the country.
