64 Navy sailors to be kicked out for drug use

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The U.S. Navy says it will kick out 64 sailors from the San Diego-based U.S. Third Fleet who have been caught for illegal drug use or distribution, mostly involving a synthetic drug that mimics marijuana.

Prado slams, Hanson sharp in Braves win over Brew

Martin Prado hit a grand slam, Tommy Hanson got plenty of run support in eight scoreless innings and the scuffling Atlanta Braves snapped a power drought in an 8-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.

Atlanta had gone 253 games without a grand slam before Prado's in the sixth. The Braves had also gone four days without a homer before Troy Glaus led off the inning with a shot off Brewers starter Doug Davis (1-4).

Bank regulators Thursday shot down a proposed deal byGore-Bronson Bancorp to acquire struggling Water Tower Bank ofChicago.

The Federal Reserve Board said the rejection was based on theinadequate records of community lending at Gore-Bronson's two banksand at Water Tower. Gore-Bronson owns Irving Bank in Chicago andBronson-Gore Bank in Prospect Heights.

Although Gore-Bronson said the deficiencies were beingaddressed, the Fed said its policies require the improvements be "inplace and working well" before an application is submitted. Theagency noted the community lending record of Bronson-Gore Bankactually declined after it was acquired by Gore-Bronson.

Russian, Afghan leaders discuss combating drugs

MOSCOW (AP) — The Afghan leader called the Russian president Wednesday to discuss the fight against drugs, the Kremlin said, days after complaining that his government hadn't been warned about a Russian participation in a recent drug bust.

President Dmitry Medvedev's phone conversation with Afghanistan's Hamid Karzai comes a week after a drug raid conducted jointly by U.S., Afghan and Russian agents near the border with Pakistan.
